What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is an age-related vision condition that causes near objects to appear blurry. It typically starts in a person’s 40’s, when the lens of the eye begins to stiffen and lose flexibility. This makes it difficult to focus on nearby objects.

Presbyopia can significantly impact your quality of life. Regular daily activities like reading books, instruction manuals and food labels, scrolling through your phone, threading a needle and other close-up tasks can become daunting.

The good news is, with the help of Suburban Eye Care, this common vision condition can be effectively managed, so you won’t have to compromise on your quality of life.

I recently finished Vision Therapy and am on my last check in. For me, Vision Therapy was well worth... it. I had a concussion five years ago that compounded additional vision issues onto ones I already had. I was in school at the time and struggled to keep up with my classmates. I had to read the same thing multiple times and longer because I skipped and misread words. My regular eye doctor, Dr. Arnold, highly recommended Vision Therapy to strengthen my eyes and to train my brain to process reading and other tasks properly. He teamed up with Dr. Smith and Vision Therapist Miss Kelsey for my care, so that I had more experienced people helping me through the process. To begin, I did a series of tests with Dr. Smith and Miss Kelsey to determine my starting point. On a weekly basis, I worked with Miss Kelsey through various exercises and did homework throughout the remainder of the week. There were many times when I was frustrated with my progress, especially when I struggled with some exercises. Miss Kelsey was incredibly encouraging and flexible to changing an exercise as needed. Throughout my time in vision therapy and after it, I experienced many improvements, particularly in reading and comprehension. When I had to study for a licensing exam, I could not believe the difference. It was so much easier and less stressful for me. I read quicker and remembered more than I would have before. For the first time in a long time, I felt confident in my learning and comprehension. Thank you Suburban Eye Care for helping me through my vision issues!

I highly recommend the Vision Therapy program! As an adult going through the process it opened up m... y eyes to what was really going on with me. I was having horrible anxiety about driving, going on vacation, going out with friends, even day to day activities were too much for me. It was because my eyes were not working together anymore(Convergence insufficiency & Vertical Heterophoria) and I was seeing double. Dr. Kayla Smith is a fantastic Optometrist who I saw throughout the program. She cares so much for her patients and listens to your concerns. Amanda G was my fantastic Vision Therapist. We worked together for 6 months. She sent me home with exercises to work on and met once a week in office. She's kind, warm and very very encouraging! Together they gave me the tools and exercises to work through vision issues and my anxiety that is being caused by my diagnosed problems. I graduated therapy and couldn't be more happy with the program. I am grateful that I was prescribed Prism glasses to wear when my eyes get fatigued to help with my Vertical Heterophoria(vertical misalignment of my right eye). If you're having vision issues, are anxious about being in a car or even living your normal life seems more anxiety ridden I suggest making an appointment for to see if you are a candidate for Vision Therapy!

I have worn contacts/ glasses for 30 years and I just learned about myopia therapy and numerous trea... tments that may slow progression - when researching options for my 12 year old son. Trying the multifocal contact lenses for him in a few weeks in hopes his vision won't get as bad as mine. Dr. Arnold and team were so knowledgeable and professional. May also look at OrthoK as an option in the future (wearing hard contacts at night so no contacts needed the next day, such an amazing thought!!) Will definitely continue to see them.

Vision Therapy Testimonial Written By: Taylor Coppola VT Program: May 2022 - February 2023 I have a... lways been an independent person. I thought that I was functioning great until I was concussed. After my severe post concussion syndrome was treated I was at the top of my game. I felt great; I had received the all clear from one of the world's best, most accomplished, Osteopathic Manipulation therapists, who focuses on Cranial Osteopath work. I was back to work, social activities and life looked normal again. My OMT did recommend that I see a neurologist, dentist and optometrist to get a comprehensive understanding post concussion. I was quickly cleared by the neurologist and dentist. When I went to visit Dr. Jacobi for a standard eye exam (or so I thought), boy did it turn out to be so much more. In this appointment I learned that my vision was impaired for more than 21 years of my life. Not just because of my concussion, but other previous injuries impacted me and did not self-correct. It was because of this concussion that I learned that I was accommodating my impairment, rather than fixing the problem(s). Through vision therapy, completed by Amanda Franklyn, I was able to learn how to use my eyes. My vision has been given back to me as a result of these treatments, activities and support. Let me say that again...MY VISION HAS BEEN GIVEN BACK TO ME AS A RESULT OF TREATMENT. My headaches, morning nausea, facial twitches, panic attacks and body twitches are healed/gone. My light sensitivity, need for glasses: tinted and prescription, re-reading/poor reading skills are also healed/gone. I can play video games, drive independently/and as a passenger, look at screens all while not getting motion sickness. My life will forever be changed for the better due to the therapeutic services that I received at Suburban Eye Care. I will continue to use these skills that I have learned, corrected and advanced at SEC. Thank you Amanda, Dr. Jacobi and the rest of the SEC team for changing my life in such a powerful way.

After having a few fit issues with my glasses, Amber was able to help me figure out what the issue w... as and find the perfect pair for me. Once we swapped frames the benefit was noticed instantly and I haven't had any issues since. I really appreciate her level of care and service. I also really enjoy working with Dr. Arnold and feel comfortable in this office.

Presbyopia Diagnosis Treatment FAQs

What is presbyopia treatment?

Presbyopia treatment corrects age-related farsightedness to enable you to see close-up objects, such as books and electronic screens more clearly. Treatments include:

  • Eyeglasses
  • Contact lenses
  • Laser surgery
  • Lens implants
Can presbyopia be cured?

Currently, there is no cure. The good news is that our optometrists can recommend a variety of treatment options to help you see your best, from near to far.

How do I know if I have presbyopia?

If you’re over 40 and struggle with any of the following, you may have presbyopia.

  • Holding a book or a screen at arm’s length to see it more clearly
  • Needing larger print or font size to read
  • Blurry vision while reading
  • Difficulty reading in dim light
  • Eye strain and headaches when focusing on near objects

If you have one or more of these signs, schedule an eye exam and ask us about glasses, contact lenses, or other presbyopia treatment options.

Are bifocals right for me?

If it’s hard for you to read and to see things at a distance, bifocals may be your perfect solution. With bifocals, you can get two prescriptions in one. One corrects farsightedness and the other corrects nearsightedness. We offer several different types of bifocal lenses to suit your personal preference.
